BETHEL PARK SOCCER ASSOCIATION

Board Meeting – May 11, 2004

Russ Spicuzza, President of the Bethel Park Soccer Association (BPSA), call the meeting to order at 8:10pm in the Caucus Room of the Bethel Park Municipal Building. Also present were Mark Acker, Tom Boss, Rich Chongaway, Ed Emmett, Bill Harvey, Jay Hocksworth (MLS), Jack Kun, Stan Sbei, Tom Vater, and Mark Vescovi.

Secretary’s Report: The April minutes were posted on the website prior to the meeting, and distributed at the meeting. Several errors were corrected on the April minutes, and they were approved.

Treasurer’s Report: The current balance is $10,425.66. Money from Recreation Department is due, and Gary Lafever is currently working on sending us a check for spring registration. Referee checks have been mailed for the first half of the season, and checks for second half will be sent shortly. Please let Jack know if a game is added to your home schedule, and you will need additional money for the referees. Trophies have been ordered for the Memorial Day Tournament for flights.

President’s Report: Russ has been hearing a lot of good things about the season so far. Please keep up the good work.

Committees:

Communications: We had the soccer registration form published in the Bethel Park Chronicle. It also appeared (along with an article) in both the April and May School Recreation News. It was suggested that other ways to advertise would be in The Almanac (Eleanor Bailey is the sports editor), and BPTV.

Registration: Registration table will be on May 26, 2004 from 7-8:30pm in Council Chambers. Tom requested help with the table that night. We really don’t have any numbers yet for fall registration. Early Bird registration ends June 11, 2004. Bill Harvey recommended handing out registration forms during the last two weeks of flights. Travel registration ends July 9, 2004, and Flight registration ends August 6, 2004.

Travel Commissioner: Tom will be sending out e-mail to all current coaches, asking what their plans are for the fall. All coaches are asked to respond as to whether they are coaching; if they are planning tryouts, and whether they are expanding or collapsing their teams. There was discussion of try-outs for U-10 Boys and Girls. We are hoping for two u-10 Girls teams, and Mark Acker will be one coach. We are hoping for two U-10 Boys teams, but have not identified any coaches yet. Please spread the word.  The tryouts will be held on May 22nd for boys and girls during their respective flights. Tom will let the Recreation department know, and also have it posted on the website.

Referees: Scheduling of referees was going well. Partnering an experienced referee with a new referee during flights has been helpful. Tom and Ed will assess how much partnering will be needed in the fall.

It was suggested that we have Referee Feedback Form for both the home and visiting team coaches for each home game. It was also suggested that adult referees be used as assessors during flight game. We will look into both of those suggestions. We may also develop a written checklist for start and end of game for referees.

Website: Mark gave a report on Website hits and mailing list updates.

Bylaws: No report.

PR: Bob Monte reported that flyers went out for the Riverhound-Bethel Park Game during flights 2 & 3 the last week in April. So far, he only had about 15 responses. He was going to open up the ticket limit from 2/ player to entire families. He and Tom Vater will canvas their flights this weekend to distribute the tickets to players and families that are going. Our opening game warm-up will start at 4:30pm. Bob will contact players to remind them to be out there on time.

Player Development: Stan reported that Don Snyder sent a mailing list for summer camps. Again, those camps are Riverhound Soccer Camp on June 21-24; Shoot to Score Camp on July 12-16, and MLS Camp on August 2-6. All camps are at Village Green.

Also, Stan is looking for someone to be an alternate contact for the camps in case he is out of town.

Stan is conducting goalkeeper training at Millennium on Tuesday evening from 6-7:30pm.

Other tournaments coming up are Norwin- Got Milk Tourney, and Bush Run Round Up on June 5&6.

Jay Hocksworth was introduced as our MLS PDA for this session. He is attending Monday Flight 4, Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday U-10 Boy/Girl practices, Friday U-10 Boy conditioning, and Saturday Flight programs. Jay thanked the board for using MLS for their professional coaching needs.

Flights:

Memorial Day Tournament’s sight has not been determined. The school wants to charge addition money for janitors since it is a holiday. Site will be announced prior to the Memorial Day Weekend. Flight 5 will still be held Saturday, and Flights 1-4 on Monday. Flight 1-3 will probably be at Village Green, and Flight 4 will be at Millennium. Also, Bill announced which flights will be using their rain day make-up. Flight 2 will end with the Memorial Day Tournament. Flight 5 will end on Saturday, May 29. The other Flights (#1, 3, & 4) will play on June 5, 2004 as their last game.

Fields: Everything is going well, and the fields are in good shape. We had a small snafu in scheduling recently on a Saturday.

Equipment: Start thinking about collecting jerseys at the end of the season. Also, please finish collecting the old jerseys so that we can get our final payment for the misprinted jerseys.  Jack is still looking for corner flags. There was discussion concerning purchasing a set for each coach instead of each field. But we must first identify all the set we have.
