BETHEL PARK SOCCER ASSOCIATION

Parents/Coaches Meeting – June 10, 2003

Terry Bove, President of the Bethel Park Soccer Association (BPSA), called the meeting to order at 8:00pm in the Council Caucus Room of the Bethel Park Municipal Building. Also present were Tom Boss, Mark Bowman, Bill Harvey, Jack Kun, Dave Porco, Russ Spicuzza, Tom Vater, Brian Wassel, and Eric Young.

Secretary’s Report: The May meeting minutes were posted in the web site prior to this meeting. No corrections were submitted. The May minutes were officially approved.

Treasurer’s Report: Jack reported that we have a health balance in the account. We have enough money to cover expensed for the fall. We are still waiting the final check from the Spring Session for the Rec Department. All discrepancies have been straightened out for the final check to be cut and sent to us.  Jack will distribute the budget for next year during new business.

President’s Report: Terry reminded everyone about the Riverhound Camp (June 23-26), the Shoot to Score Camp (July 14-18), and the MLS camp (July 28-August 2) this summer.     He also mentioned that the PA West President’s meeting was July 16th. PA West had approved many changes at their most recent meeting that will affect both travel teams and the flight program. All the changes that were passed can be viewed on the PA West website.  Some of the more significant changes involve max team roster for U-10 and

U-11, and registration level (A or B, 1 or 2) with respect to the number of cup players on a travel team. The also revised many guidelines for field size for travel and flights.

Coach/Player Development: Stan had e-mailed the board concerning recent deployment to Oklahoma for work reasons. He won’t be able to handle registration for the MLS camp. Jack Kun volunteered to collect the pre-registrations until the middle of July. Bill Harvey will collect them the week before the camp. Jack will be there for the start of camp.

Registration: Mark Bowman reported that we had about 50 registrations at the table in May. Our totals as of June 10th were 92 for travel, and 289 for flights.  Registration continues until August 8th for flights and travel. All travel information must be in by August 12th to Tom Vater, who will be handling the travel registration with PA West. Please, if you need cards, contact Mark or Tom. All cup players must be identified on your roster. If your player had two registration stickers from previous year, you must get a new card. Please leave the Season and Age Group blanks empty on your cards. ID numbers are the last six digits of the players SS#. Baptismal certificates are not acceptable as proof of birth date. You may use a birth certificate, or a previous players card that is stickered as proof of birth date.

Again, all travel registration documents deadline is AUGUST 12TH. We are meeting the District Registrar on August 23rd.  Don’t miss your first travel game because you miss these deadlines. Tom phone number is 412-882-6561.

Flights deadline is also August 8th. Don Snyder thought were running ahead of registration compared to last year.  There was discussion concerning the early bird special deadline occurring before the last flights weekend. Bill Harvey motioned that we extend the early bird one week to 6/15/03. Tom Vater seconded. Motion passed. (Secretary’s note: The Rec Dept found the record keeping for the extension too cumbersome, and eliminated the extension.)

PR/Fundraising: Russ reported that Photography by James would again be used as our photographer for team and individual photo in the fall.

Bethel Park Night at the Riverhounds will be July 25th. There is a $2 discount for adults and $1 discount for children if tickets are purchased at least 3 days in advance. Call 412-381-GOAL or visit www.riverhounds.com for more details. Russ noted that Mark had updated the web page with the Riverhound game information. Russ was going to ask Mark to send out a general reminder, also.

Jack Kun will handle the pre-game scrimmage with U-10 travel team players. Bill Harvey will get Flight 1 players (boys & girls) for the half-time scrimmages. The game is televised and it is International Day. (Our flight shirts will fit in quite well.)

Website: Mark Vescovi sent a report concerting usage statistics. Visits were again increase over the previous month. He had also updated the website with Riverhound night information, and U10 boys tryout information.

Equipment: Eric presented the MLS jersey. It was not an actual replica of the shirt we would buy. The thought the price was actually lower that the other bids we had. He motioned that we buy the shirts. There was also discussion about the quantity of shirts to buy. Jack stated that we did have enough money to buy 250 jerseys with BP logos. After much discussion, Dave Porco showed us the same style shirt from the same manufacturer that his team has purchased several years ago. There was discussion about the quality of the shirt. There was also discussion about the quantity of each size to purchase. Jack submitted his breakdown based on last falls travel registration. It was felt that he and Eric could decide the final breakdown of sizes.

Finally, a motion was made to only purchase 200 shirts to start. Motion passed. Another motion was made to see an actual replica of the jersey we were purchasing before the order was placed. Motion passed. And a motion was made to have a panel of at least three board members examine the jersey before the order for confirmed. Motion passed. Eric was to contact MLS to obtain the replica for the next step in the process.  Eric also mentioned that any request for equipment could be made. He will try to get the equipment requested as soon as possible.

Flights: Bill announced the results of sessions actually played during the spring session: Flight 1-seven weeks; Flight 2-nine weeks, Flight 3-five weeks, Flight 4- six weeks, Flight 5B- six weeks, Flight 5G- six weeks. He suggested looking at starting flights one week later next spring.

There was discussion concerning where the flights would play since Village Green will not be available in the fall. We need to check where to store the nets at Millennium, Ben Franklin, and Neil Armstrong. Terry will check with the Rec Dept about those arrangements. It was suggested to have Flight 1, 2 & 3 at Millennium, Flight 4&5B at Franklin, and keep 5G at Neil.

Bill is holding a Flight Commissioner’s meeting on Sunday, June 15th at Al’s Café. He will call everyone as a reminder. Also, he is planning a Y-Coaches Clinic in August for all new Flight Coaches. More information as he gets it.

Fields: Brian announced that the lower parking at Neil Armstrong is gone. Please watch for the parking signs before parking. You may get tagged.

Eric asked if we could request the county to fix up Edgeworth field in South Park. He thought the field was in Bethel Park, and we could use it and keep it up. (Secretary’s note: the field is actually in South Park Township.) It was suggested that Eric contact Vince Gastgeb about the field.

Travel: Mark Vescovi and Tom Vater presented their U-10 Boys team rosters for approval. There was one spot left. Several Upper St Clair players asked to play on our teams if space allows have approached them. With the smaller roster size for U-10, we don’t know if we will have any spaces left. The roosters were approved.

Jeff Moad will be conducting U-10 Girls tryouts on June 11th. The fate of the SAGASYL league is not known yet.

Travel Commissioners were appointed: Mark Vescovi- U-10 boys, Jeff Moad- U-10 girls, Jack Kun- U11&12 boys, Terry Bove-U11&12 girls, Mike Hurley- U13&14 boys, Dave Porco- U13&14 girls. Russ Spicuzza- U15&16 girls; Vacant- U15&16 boys. Thank you commissioners!!
